Purpose-Social media have become an increasingly important source for people to learn about politics and public affairs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of social media news sharing as a reasoning process of the O-S-R-O-R model and the moderation role of social media news performance on the association between news consumption and attitudinal changes.Design/methodology/approach-A national survey was conducted in the US. The researcher recruited participants in the Qualtrics national panel by following the census adult demographic breakdown.Findings-This study finds that social media news consumption on the US-China trade conflict is likely to lead Americans to change attitudes toward Chinese, and this relationship is mediated by social media news sharing. In addition, the indirect relationship via news sharing is found particularly strong among individuals who perceive social media news fair and balanced.Originality/value-This study extends the literature by examining social media news engagement on the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China. It reveals that the impact of social media news consumption on people's attitudinal and behavioral changes depends on people's perceived news quality on these platforms. Optical discs are popular for exchanging and distributing content. A small Portable Blue disc with a diameter of 30 mm stores at least 1 GB in a single layer using Blu-ray Disc technology. We describe strategies to achieve low power consumption in a Portable Blue system. Estimates show a value around 1/20 of the peak power (/spl sim/1 W) while streaming 1 Mb/s data.

This study employs the orientation-stimulus-reasoning-orientation-response (O-S-R-O-R) framework to examine how multi-platform news consumption is associated with civic participation during the COVID-19 pandemic (offline and via social media) and how this relation is mediated by civic talk and civic attitudes. A survey was administered to 1500 adults in Belgium. Results from structural equation modelling indicate how civic talk with weak ties is not associated with civic attitudes or participation. Analysis of indirect effects reveals that multi-platform news consumption stimulates two different types of participation, through civic talk with strong ties and civic attitudes. The results shed light on previously unexplored pathways towards participation, while providing support for the O-S-R-O-R framework and highlighting the role of social media as an emerging arena for civic participation.

Development of high-value horticultural markets for compost requires improved characterization of compost properties. Most composts have pH of 7-8 and act as a partial substitute for lime in potting media. The objective of this research was to develop and validate a reproducible method for determining the pH buffering capacity of compost. To estimate compost buffering capacity (CBC), the quantity of acidity needed to reduce pH by one unit, dilute sulfuric acid (H_2SO_4; 0.1-1.0 mol H~+/kg compost) was allowed to equilibrate with compost at 22 ℃ for 72 h. The CBC was calculated as the negative reciprocal of the slope of the linear regression: compost pH (y-axis) versus acid addition rate (x-axis). The CBC for eight composts ranged from 0.21 to 0.45 mol H~+ per kg compost per pH unit (avg = 0.31). The CBC determined from dilute acid addition for 72 h was validated via incubation of compost plus S° dust at 22 ℃ for 28 days. For the eight composts evaluated, S° addition to acidify compost by 1 pH unit (as predicted by CBC) resulted in an actual pH decline of 1.1 units (SE = 0.2), and predicted S° addition to acidify it by 2 pH units resulted in an actual decline of 1.7 units (SE = 0.2). The CBC test method is recommended for evaluation by commercial compost testing laboratories.

DNA microarrays containing virtually every gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were used to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the temporal program of gene expression accompanying the metabolic shift from fermentation to respiration. The expression profiles observed for genes with known metabolic functions pointed to features of the metabolic reprogramming that occur during the diauxic shift, and the expression patterns of many previously uncharacterized genes provided clues to their possible functions. The same DNA microarrays were also used to identify genes whose expression was affected by deletion of the transcriptional co-repressor TUP1 or overexpression of the transcriptional activator YAP1. These results demonstrate the feasibility and utility of this approach to genomewide exploration of gene expression patterns.
